Fishing Heaven- Normandy - France

Blessed with more than its fair share of rivers, the region is considered one of the best in France for salmon fishing and also for sea-trout, whilst brown trout are multiplying faster here than elsewhere nationally. Anglers are not confined to just fishing the rivers - there are also many lakes and former gravel pits where the sport is pike or carp. The brochure " Peche en Mer et Rivieres " is available on request with all the best fishing spots.

Norman Specialities - French drinks

Cider, Poire (pear cider) pommeau ( fotified apple wine), Calvados . Apart from cider, these are not much drunk in bars - more for tourists or home consumption A kir normand is cider and cassis ( or, according to others, poire and chassis). A true kir normand should also have a dash of Calvados . Cafe- calva - coffee with a dash of Calvados - might be drunk as a disgestif after Sunday lunch but otherwise it is mainly ordered by " les Anciens " a more elderly crowd. Straight Calvados is drunk at the end of an evening.

Hot Drinks - French Drinks

HOT DRINKS hot chocolate is not just for children and women struggling with their diet but, like kir , is non-sissy and popular with adult men and women. Cafe Creme is milky coffee, cappuccino made with frothed milk and cafe' Viennois with Chantilly ( the squirted, whipped cream). A TISSANNE is a herbal tea and probably a safer bet than trying to get a cuppa.

Non-Alcoholic - French Drinks

Non - Alcoholic drinks - back to the 50+ SIROPS . These can be drunk a' l'eau ( with water) but are more commonly ordered with lemonade and called DIABOLO eg a Diabolo - fraise , Diabolo - citron etc. You can still get the refreshing orange and citron presse ' in most bars but it is rarely ordered these days ( often by foreigners over about 40 who learnt about them in French schoolbooks) ORANGINA is , of course, typically French, and still ordered although most French are more likely to order Coke or Sprite - just like the rest of the world.

Les Shooters - French Drinks

Les Shooters - shots - are popular with the young on a Friday or Saturday night when clubbers hit the bars around 10 pm before moving on to the " boites " - nightclubs at around 1 am. Too expensive for daily consumption, as are spirits and mixers, the most popular of which are whiskey-Coke and vodka- pomme (vodka and apple juice)

Pharaoh Hound - Obama's ideal first dog/puppy

Image
The Pharoah Hound (Tal-Fenek) is the ideal dog for Obama. According to Wikipedia: The Pharaoh Hound is an intelligent, trainable, playful and active breed. It is sociable with other dogs and with people. The Pharaoh Hound is independent-minded, highly intelligent, and occasionally stubborn, yet very trainable when positive methods are used. Pharaohs were bred to hunt and think for themselves, and they have retained this trait for thousands of years. They tire/bore easily with repetitive commands, therefore it is the trainer's job to ensure that their training remains interesting and positive in nature. They are a very active breed and need more than just a daily walk; a run every day is required. Though they are active, they should not be hyperactive. Link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharaoh_Hound The Kelb tal-Fenek is an ideal breed for the Obama family, and fits the role of a first dog. It should even go well with the vice-president's dog.

Some tips on driving in Spain

It is legal requirement for motorists in Spain to carry two red warning triangles. These are to be placed in front of and behind the vehicle in the event of an accident or breakdown. Drivers must have a spare pair of spectacles (if needed for driving), a spare wheel and a set of spare bulbs plus the tools to change them. Drivers should be on the look-out thieves who target foreign-registered and hire cars, especially those towing caravans. If you decide to stop to check the condition of your vechicle , you should be extremely wary of anyone offering help.

Some tips on driving in FRANCE

The French police strictly enforce speeding restrictions and if you exceed speed limits you will face heavy on-the-spot fines, often payable only by the exact amount in cash. If you break French driving laws you can also have your UK driving licence confiscated by the French Police. This could lead to your vehicle being temporarily impounded if no alternative driver with a valid licence is available. A single continuous white line is equivalent to a double white line in the UK and means 'do not overtake' There are two speed limits for motorways and dual carriageways: the lower one should be obeyed in wet weather - and always by drivers who have held a licence for less than two years.

Notre-Dame Cathedral Amiens - France

Amiens Notre -Dame Cathedral has been described in the following terms: light, perfection... built to harmonious proportions. The progress in techniques, experience gained on other building sites, and the speed of its construction confer an extraordinary architectural unity to Amiens cathedral. It is France's largest Gothic edifice (145m long and 70 m wide) and has the loftiest nave in France. It could hold two cathedrals the size of Notre Dame de Paris. The statues regain their medieval colours thanks to the light projectors that focus on them during shows staged in the summer season. Amiens cathedral was listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1981 for its outstanding architecture and in 1998, as a stage on the way to Compostella . Telephone: +33(0)3 22 71 60 50

Wine - French Drinks

WINE: Wine consumption has dropped dramatically at lunchtimes. It used to be a BOTTLE, then a PICHET (jug) then a quart(enough for a couple of glasses.) But now most - reluctant to eat a meal without even a taste of wine - are ordering wine by the glass.

Beers - French Drinks

THE BEERS: either bottled or pression (draught) Order a DEMI (25cl) or a GALOPIN (12cl) if you are feeling abstemious. For a raging thirst you need either a BARON or a PINT (from the English pint but pronounced pant) - the size of these varies from area to area but is generally either 50cl or 75cl. SHANDY: For a shandy, ask for a PANACHE; for a shandy with a dash of grenadine ask for a MONACO. Beers are oftenserved with a GLUG of SIROP (cordial) order a DEMI-FRAISE, DEMI-PECHE etc Popular among the young
