Punts are flat-bottomed boats which are usually propelled with a long pole. They were developed in medieval times as work boats for use in water too shallow for conventional keeled craft. These boats were used by fowlers, fishermen and reed - cutters in Fens. Punting for pleasure, rather than work, first became popular in Edwardian times.
