Paleo-Christian Site and Church Saint-Seurin - Bordeaux, France

The archaeological crypt of Saint-Seurin is one of the oldest Gallo-Roman and Merovingian sites in Bordeaux.  Archaeological digs carried out to the south of the church in 1910 uncovered a vast Christian necropolis, with tombs dating from the 4th to the 18th century. A funerary basilica and the source of Saint Seurin's remarkable influence, the crypt helps us better understand Bordeaux's Christian origins, through its frescoed tombs, sarcophagi and children's amphora sepultures. Saint-Seurin Church (a historical Monument) includes a crypt (with Gallo-Roman comumns and capitals, and Merovingian marble sarcophagi)) and an 11th century porch.  The chevet, part of the transept, the first bay of the nave and side aisles, and the western bell tower were constructed in the 12th century, the rest of the nave, the right of the transept and the Sainte-Catherine chapel in the 13th and the south door and final bays of the side aisles in the 14th.  The western facade was restored in

Grotte de Pair-Non Pair - PRIGNAC -ET MARCAMPS - France

Pair-Non-Pair (a National Monument) is the only painted cave in the Gironde open to the public.  Its walls are adorned with engravings dating back to the Aurignacian period (between 33,000 and 26,000 BC) - among the oldest known examples of wall art in Western Europe, and depiciting a highly varied bestiary (with over 40 animal representations) including ibexes, horses, mammoths, cervidae and bovidae. The Pair -non-pair cave was discovered in 1881 and the archaeologist, ethnologist, anthropologist and prehistorian Francois Daleau (1845 - 1927) worked up until 1896 uncovering its treasures. It was one of the very first decorated caves to be discovered in France.  A new entry pavilion designed by the Bordeaux architect Patrick Hernandez was built in 2008, adding to the cultural and tourist attraction of this remarkable cave.  Commentated visits (in French, English and Spanish) Grotte de Pair-Non-Pair 33710 Prignac-Et-Marcmps Bordeaux Tel/Fax:  +33 5 57 68 33 40 Web:   www.m
