Fischergasse / Metzergasse - Germany

The narrow and winding Fischergasse (fisher lane) with its 16th / 17th century middle-class houses is definitely one of the highlights of the lovingly renovated Old Town. In former times the Rhine fishermen used to live there.   Their guild house has been renovated by a citizen's initiative and is used today as arts centre. The prolongation of the Fischergasse is the Metzgergasse (butcher's lane).  Formerly, it was only here where it was allowed to sell meat and even today there is still a butchery on site.

Gallustrurm - Germany

The huge tower Gallusturm is located in the eastern point of the former island town.   The reason for ts edification was a disastrous  flood in 1343.   Apart from its function as breakwater between the two arms of the Rhine, it also served as an important defence facility.   Since 1973 the local carnival society uses the Gallusturm as  Bastion against moroseness." In the shadows of the tower you will find the rippling Gallus fountain.   The bronze sculpture of Saint Gallus together with the tamed bear reminds one of the keen missionaries of the alemannic area.   The monasteries Sackingen and St Gallen cultivated most of the land on both sides of the Rhine.

Rudolf - Eberle - Platz - Sackingen, Germany

The bronze stele of the sculptor Klaus Ringwald symbolises the completion of the urban regeneration (1974 -1983)  and gained recognition from all over the country.  On three pages the most important themes of Sackingen history are illustrated the life of Saint Fridolin, the legend of the trumpeter of Sackingen and the thermal culture which enjoys a long tradition. The service and communication centre which is also a nice place to meet friends and relax, was built at the foot of the medieval city wall, in the middle of the river bed of the former Rhine branch that has been filled up during the 19th century.   Embedded in the heart of appealing public and private green spots, the Rudolf-Eberle-Platz (place named after former Minister of economic Affairs Rudolf Eberle) is the important connecting urban link between the centre of the Old Town and the train station.   The historical Old Town and modern architecture merge into perfect harmony.  It is ...
