The Pre-Raphaelites and The Italian Dream

Italy was a rich source of inspiration for the Pro-Raphaelites . British artists who formed a confraternity in 1848 to declare their rejection of academic conventions in the name of expressive naturalism. The exhibition organised by MAR, in co-operation with the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford where it will move in September, explores the relationship between the Pre-Raphaelites and the "Italian Dream" in literature, art, history and landscape, with a selection of 170 paintings, engravings and preparatory cartoons for mosaics. Alongside works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (including his famous illustrations for the Divine Comedy) Edward Brune-Jones, William Holman Hunt and John Ruskin, there are paintings by Beato Angelico ( the Nativity and Prayer in the Garden from the Civic Painting Gallery in Forli) Perugino ( Adoration of Christchild ) and other Italian artists viewed as archetypes by the Pre-Raphaelites Ravenna - MAR Till 6th June 2010 www.museocit
