The Monte dei Cappuccini is one of Turin's landmarks. In the 11th Century the Mount was a fortification (known as "bastita") to defend the city from at-tacks and sieges. In 1473 it became a private property. In 1581, the owner noble Scaravello family, sold it to the Duke of Savoy, Carlo Emmanuele 1. In 1891 the City of Turin approved the request of the Italian Alpine Club to open a branch and take over the friary.
