Baltimore Quaker Museum is the only museum in Ireland dedicated to Quaker heritage in the local context. It contains a Quaker costume collection as well as one room dedicated to the memory of Mary Leadbeater. Items of Quaker interest include a wedding dress and bonnet worn by Marian Richardson (nee Wakefield) at Baltimore in 1853. In the entrance hall are the door and lintel stone from the original Shackleton home at Harden in Yorkshire which was built in 1660.  Also in the entrance hall is a  ledger dated 1807 - 1810 for the Shackleton Mills at Lucan.  Amongst the Baltimore manuscripts on display are Shackleton letters and notebooks which contain water colours by Mary Shackleton and the Baltimore Magazine for July 1809. Located in the former 18th Century Market House, Athy Heritage Centre Museum traces th history of the Anglo- Norman town on the Marshes of Kildare.  View the Grand Canal, Great Famine , Military Conflict, WW1 , Quakers, Kellyites and Gordon Bennett exhibits and much more.  Renowned for the only permanent exhibition to local Polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, which includes a 4.5 metre model of ship Endurance.  Audio guides and film footage bring the experience to life. Run by Irish Peatland Conservation Council the centre includes a peatland museum where all aspects of Irish peatlands can be explored.  The centre also offers wildlife gardens that you can walk through at your leisure where  you can visit Ireland and the UK 's largest public display of insect eating plants.  Before you leave why not visit an example of an intact raised bog. St Brigid's Cathedral is a beautifully restored Norman Cathedral that occupies the site of the original pagan shrine to the goddess Brigid, the early Christian foundation and church of St Brigid.  Designed in an early gothic style with a square central tower, the Cathedral was built in troubled times for defence as well as a place for worship.  Between 1223 and 1230 the present Cathedral was built.  The grounds of the Cathedral contain a number of fascinating links to the early history of the site including a Round Tower, Celtic  Cross and St Brigid's Firehouse.
