Museum and Gallo-Roman Villa From the 1s to the 16th century AD three villas succeeded one another on the Gallo-Roman estate of Blacciacum (Plassac) in the shores of the estuary.  Wealthy landowners were responsible for the building of these sumptuous  seaside palaces with their galleries, patios, and belvederes facing the river, their design inspired by the architecture in vogue in Imperial Rome, with precious marbles serving as a background for shimmering mosaics and painted decoration modelled on the Pompeian style of the 3rd century.
