The traditional symbol of the city, the Abbey of St Gallen was named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983. The building houses the oldest library in Switzerland, which is also one o the richest in the world: more than 160,000 books and manuscripts are displayed in magnificent rococo surroundings. Make monastery's under-ground vaults to view an important collection of monumental sculptures dating from the Carolingian, Ottoman and Gothic periods.
