The Crib
The crib tradition began in the 13th century by a humble friar, St Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, created the first ever nativity scene in the year 1223. He wanted to arouse devotion in the Italian village of Greccio and celebrate Christmas with the greatest possible solemnity in memory of the birth of the Child Jesus. From then on, the setting up of cribs during Christmas became a worldwide tradition.
