Apart from cider, these are not much drunk in bars - more for tourists or home consumption A kir normand is cider and cassis ( or, according to others, poire and chassis). A true kir normand should also have a dash of Calvados . Cafe- calva - coffee with a dash of Calvados - might be drunk as a disgestif after Sunday lunch but otherwise it is mainly ordered by " les Anciens " a more elderly crowd. Straight Calvados is drunk at the end of an evening.

HOT DRINKS hot chocolate is not just for children and women struggling with their diet but, like kir , is non-sissy and popular with adult men and women. Cafe Creme is milky coffee, cappuccino made with frothed milk and cafe' Viennois with Chantilly ( the squirted, whipped cream). A TISSANNE is a herbal tea and probably a safer bet than trying to get a cuppa.

Non - Alcoholic drinks - back to the 50+ SIROPS . These can be drunk a' l'eau ( with water) but are more commonly ordered with lemonade and called DIABOLO eg a Diabolo - fraise , Diabolo - citron etc. You can still get the refreshing orange and citron presse ' in most bars but it is rarely ordered these days ( often by foreigners over about 40 who learnt about them in French schoolbooks) ORANGINA is , of course, typically French, and still ordered although most French are more likely to order Coke or Sprite - just like the rest of the world.

Les Shooters - shots - are popular with the young on a Friday or Saturday night when clubbers hit the bars around 10 pm before moving on to the " boites " - nightclubs at around 1 am. Too expensive for daily consumption, as are spirits and mixers, the most popular of which are whiskey-Coke and vodka- pomme (vodka and apple juice)
