Walking Along the Walls - Bergamo, Italy

A pleasant stroll to explore the Venetian Walled Circuit.

Length of the walking tour:  approximately 3 kilometres

- Path:  Porta S Agostino - Viale delle Mura - Colle Aperto - Via Boccola - Via alla porta

- S Lorenzo - Via della Fara - Porta S Agostino

Did you know that....?

....along Viale delle Mura, a few meters from Porta S Agostino, you can admire two gigantic vine topiaries, one swan-shaped and the other heart-shaped

....since 1887 the funicular connects the Lower Town (271 a,s,l) with the Upper Town (356 a.s,l)

The idea of connecting the two parts of Bergamo with this kind of transportation was originally intended to save the Upper Town from economic and geographic isolation, which occurred after the
development of the Lower Town.
A second funicular connects the Upper Town with S. Vigilio Hill (459 a.s.l), the starting point for relaxing strolls which lead to ancient roads and breathtaking glimpses of the panorama.

.....on the small plots of land surrounding the Walls, mostly in Borgo Canale area, the Sacrola dei Colli
di Bergamo ( a variety of endive) has been cultivated for centuries. 1961, Enrico panattoni, owner of "La Marianna" restaurant, created a gelato variety that would
become world famous.  Consisting of milk-based ice cream filled with fine, irregular chips of chocolate, this flavour was named after one of the most popular curses served at his restaurant. the corner of each gate, of some streets and at S.Viglio Funicular station, you can see marble headstones reading "sul livello del mare m.." (altitude above sea level

....columns and crosses were placed in the spots where churches had been demolished during the construction  of the Walls

....from the walls you can spot Kilometro Rosso and the ilab(Centro Ricercas e Innovazione itakcementi); designed by two-world famous architects; the former by Jean Nouvel and the latter by
Richard Meier.

The Venetian Walls - Bergamo, Italy

Discovering the defensive systems and the Fortifications of Bergamo

The City of Bergamo is leading the proposed nomination of the serial transnational site The venetian Works of Defence between 15th and 17th Centuries for the UNESCO World Heritage List; which is representative of the complex defensive system designed and built by the Serenissima republic of Venice to control its territories and the commercial routes.  The site extends for more than 1,000 km across the " Stato di Terra " ( Lombard-Venetian) and the "Stato di Terra" (Sea State: Croatia, Montenegro)
The cities constituting the site are significant examples of the fortification work that Venice carried out, thanks to the best architects, military engineers and designers of the time, who moved across the
Republic's territories. The works of the defensive system were conceived as a network, and each single element of it played a strategic role inside the project.

Our two Tourist Information offices, open all the year round, are glad to provide you with all the information on the Venetian Walls and the City of Bergamo.
