....since 1887 the funicular connects the Lower Town (271 a,s,l) with the Upper Town (356 a.s,l)
The idea of connecting the two parts of Bergamo with this kind of transportation was originally intended to save the Upper Town from economic and geographic isolation, which occurred after the
development of the Lower Town.
A second funicular connects the Upper Town with S. Vigilio Hill (459 a.s.l), the starting point for relaxing strolls which lead to ancient roads and breathtaking glimpses of the panorama.
.....on the small plots of land surrounding the Walls, mostly in Borgo Canale area, the Sacrola dei Colli
di Bergamo ( a variety of endive) has been cultivated for centuries.
.....in 1961, Enrico panattoni, owner of "La Marianna" restaurant, created a gelato variety that would
become world famous. Consisting of milk-based ice cream filled with fine, irregular chips of chocolate, this flavour was named after one of the most popular curses served at his restaurant.
....at the corner of each gate, of some streets and at S.Viglio Funicular station, you can see marble headstones reading "sul livello del mare m.." (altitude above sea level ...mt)
....columns and crosses were placed in the spots where churches had been demolished during the construction of the Walls
....from the walls you can spot Kilometro Rosso and the ilab(Centro Ricercas e Innovazione itakcementi); designed by two-world famous architects; the former by Jean Nouvel and the latter by
