The Venetian Walls - Bergamo, Italy
Discovering the defensive systems and the Fortifications of Bergamo
The City of Bergamo is leading the proposed nomination of the serial transnational site The venetian Works of Defence between 15th and 17th Centuries for the UNESCO World Heritage List; which is representative of the complex defensive system designed and built by the Serenissima republic of Venice to control its territories and the commercial routes. The site extends for more than 1,000 km across the " Stato di Terra " ( Lombard-Venetian) and the "Stato di Terra" (Sea State: Croatia, Montenegro)
The cities constituting the site are significant examples of the fortification work that Venice carried out, thanks to the best architects, military engineers and designers of the time, who moved across the
Republic's territories. The works of the defensive system were conceived as a network, and each single element of it played a strategic role inside the project.
