Wine and Vineyards - Val Camonica, Italy

The first traces of the presence of wine in the LAG area date back to Roman times, when the culture of the vine became so important in the province of Bergamo that a temple was dedicated to Bacchus in the village of San Lorenzo. In the seventh century the Lombards invaded the lakes, forcing the inhabitants to flee. Like all invaders they were mainly interested in raiding, and did not pay any attention to the vineyards, but took full advantage of the wine that had been produced previously.  The vines were left without farmers, causing a remarkable decline in terms of their pervasiveness and productivity.  The salvation of the viticulture mainly came about thanks to care taken by the churches over their properties.  When the BenedicitinCavallina (Lake Endines settled in various monasteries in the Province of Bergamo in 1491.wine took a leap forward, and perhaps it is from this moment that these two towns became the most important wine-making centres of Bergamo.  It ...

The Langhe Roero Heritage - Ital

Castles, Churches, Towers and boroughs...... across Langhe Roero are amazing. They mirror the art and culture of this region and bear witness to its history, from the Roman era to the Middle Ages, from the age of Napoleon to the nineteenth-century days of splendour seeing prominent noble families in this territory. The heritage of past is perceivable in the allure of old churches, the singularity of architectural elements, and the legacy of great personalities who played a key role in the history of this hilly land as well as that of Italy. At the Wine Museum of Barolo the heritage of the past is the seed that brings forth the harvest of the future, and becomes material culture in the nearby Royal Residences open to the public.  The region's sites of memory of the Risorgimento also bring the past into the present, especially this year, as Italy marks the 150 anniversary of its unification. Don't miss the appointment! Strada Romantica delle Langhe e del Roero You don...

Sarnico - Italy

Historical Overview Formerly a place of pile-dwellings and Roman settlements, in the Medieval period it became a fortified hamlet with a castle in its centre, which no longer exists.  Under the Venetian domination, it developed its own trade relations with the plains.  In 1566, it was granted the right to conduct a weekly market which, after 450 years, maintains this tradition every Thursday in the squares along the lake. Failing under the French then Austrian dominations, Sarnico won independence in the rising Italian government. The town gained national prominence during the Risorgimento for the Garibaldian attempt, known to all as " the Events of Sarnico" to invade the Trentino area and conclude national independence before time. The Garibaldian attempt, considered premature by the Italian Government, was impeded at the last moment with force. The Historic District Know as the "Contrada", the historic district's streets are paved with sampietrini s...

Pope Giovanni XXIII in Bergamo

The strong bond between Saint John XXIII and Bergamo never wavered and the city always remained in his heart. He lived there for many years. He studied in Bergamo and such his experiences led to the publication of encyclicals such as "Pacam in Terris" and the San Carlo Borromeo pastoral visit. It is possible to visit places in Bergamo where Pope John XXIII lived and studied when he was  in the seminary and where he spent his first years as priest carrying out his mission in Bergamo Alta. The itinerary in Bergamo dedicated to Saint John XXIII is tied to the one in Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, where Angelo Roncalli was born, lived and also spent pleasant moments of repose when he was a bishop and cardinal. If the most significant moments of a pilgrimage to Sotto il Monte involve walking down the same streets and visiting the places where the beloved pontiff and fellow-citizen lived, a visit to Bergamo is the natural continuation of Saint John XXIII's life and work, an...
