Gombito Tower - Bergamo, Italy

The name "Gombito" comes from the location of the tower, which rises ad compitum, or at the point, or at the point of intersection of the two main roads of the Roman city.  Owned by the Zoppo family, it was built in the 12th century and is 51.60 meters  high.  The tower has exceptionally maintained its original appearance, characteristic of medieval defense buildings, in the 16th century a shop  ofthee was opened on the ground floor.
The building maintained its commercial use until the last decade of the 20th century in 1877 the owners donated it to the city of Bergamo., who in 1892 built the internal wooden staircase, still in use. Since the 20th century the tower has undergone a number of maintenance and preventive measures, the most important of which took place between 2001 and 2009 structural consolidation,
restoration of the exterior and improved safety of the staircase.
Since 2005 the Gombito Tower has housed the tourist information office (IAT) of the Muncipality of Bergamo.

The Routes of History

The top of the tower provides a privileged place to enjoy  a 360 degree view of Bergamo and its monuments, the towns on its outskirts, its hills and valleys and on very clear and sunny days; the
Apennine mountains! The only way to have this unique opportunity is to climb the 365 steps  of the
staircase inside the tower in a matter of minutes you will have access to the rooftop terrace, a prelude to an unforgettable sensory.

Interior

Within the tower you can admire the construction details of a 12th century defense structure, built by
skilled Romaneque craftsmen, and the extraordinary nature of the walls, made of 6,827 square blocks of gray Sarnico sandstone arranged in horizontal layers.
A few narrow slits and four mullioned windows placed about 42 meters high and reachable internally
by stone steps assured a weak source of light in 1892 the wooden staircase was built inside the tower
between 2007 and 2009 it was restored and its stability and safety was improved.
