Created by Bruno Cora', this show presents a 'close encounter' between Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, in 100 paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphics that demonstrate the focal points in their creative paths. The poetics of these two leading 20th century artists are also compared, from Burri's "primacy of matter" to Fontana 's "spatial thought". The Palazzo Valle, a master- piece of Catania baroque, houses the two artists' most famous "series", with works that changed the rules of artistic research: Burri's tar, sacks, Plastics, Combustions, Iron, Celletox and Cracked earth, along-side Fontana's Spatial Concepts (Holes, Cuts, Waiting, Enviornments, Nature, Quanta and Little Theatres) Dates: Till 18 May www.fondazionepuglisicosentino.it

In 1087, some sailors from Bari stole the body of St. Nicholas from Myra ( the present-day Demre in Asia Minor) and took it back to their city. The saint, a worker of miracles venerated in both the East and West, has been worshipped in Bari ever since, in one of Italy's most beautiful folk festivals. decorated with spectacular lighting, the city hosts religious rites and processions, historical re-enactments (including a parade with 400 marchers in medieval costume), concerts and fireworks. The centre of festivities is the Old Village, with the marvellous basilica dedicated to the saint, where his remains have lain for nine centuries. Date: 8 and 9 May 2010 www.commune.bari.it
