Feast of St. Nicholas - Bari - Italy
In 1087, some sailors from Bari stole the body of St. Nicholas from Myra ( the present-day Demre
in Asia Minor) and took it back to their city. The saint, a worker of miracles venerated in both the East and West, has been worshipped in Bari ever since, in one of Italy's most beautiful folk festivals. decorated with spectacular lighting, the city hosts religious rites and processions,
historical re-enactments (including a parade with 400 marchers in medieval costume), concerts
and fireworks. The centre of festivities is the Old Village, with the marvellous basilica
dedicated to the saint, where his remains have lain for nine centuries.
