The History Of Budapest - Part 1 Hungary
1st Century: The Western part of today's Hungary was the Roman province called Pannonia. Remains of the Roman settlement can be found in Aquaincum.
896 - 1000: Hungarian tribes invaded the Carpathian Basin and settled here. Saint Stephen established
the Christian Hungarian state in 1000. Saint Stephen's Basilica was named after him.
1241 - 1242 : Mongol invasions - After the Mongol invasion King Bela IV restored the country and he
started to build the first Royal Castle in Buda.
14th Century: Buda went through a strong economic development and became the royal city while
Pest functioned as a commercial town.
15 th Century: During the reign of King Matthias the Royal Palace was extended and it became one of
the most important Renaissance centres of Europe.
16 th Century: 150 years of occupational monuments are left, such as baths, ( Rac, Rudas Kirdly, Csaszar) and the Tomb and rose garden of Gul baba.
17 th - 18 th Century: Steady development of Buda and Pest ( still two separate towns at that time)
started, numerous buildings in Baroque style were built e.g. churches and the
City Hall.
