The Rhine Promenade - Bad Sackingen, Germany

The promenade was built within the scope of the construction of the Rhine hydroclectric power plant from 1961 until 1966.  The fixation and planting of the shore as well as the restoration of the Fridolin island - an extensive natural monument - date back to that period.  A maintenance plan ensures the mainentance of the protected riverine vegetation.  One of the most popular promenades is the Rhine promenade between the Gallusturm and the castle park.   The old town wall is well conserved and
protects the town since its construction during the 11th /12th century against the currents of the Rhine.  However, the design options are very limited due to the acute danger of flooding.   The last flood was in 2005.
