2. Mooghaun Bronze Age Hillfort Newmarket on Fergus
Built at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age around 950 BC this site is enclosed by woodland
and is a self guided trail up to the Hillfort which is identified as the largest in Ireland. The largest
and most spectacular hoard of prehistoric gold in Western Europe was found at Mooghaun Lough 1 km north of the hillfort and is on display in the National Museum of Ireland.
