New Year in Spain

Spaniards eat grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve, one for each of the twelve chimes of the church bell.  It is considered unlucky if one has not eaten all the twelve grapes by the last chimes  before people wish each other good luck.  The custom is said to have been introduced in 1909 as a result of the record grape harvest that year.
