The Green Man - Cambridge, UK
On a crisp autumnal night with winter looming, I can think of nothing I would enjoy than escaping the bracing cold by slipping into the inviting warmth of an English pub. The Green Man offers just the solution, with a fine selection of local cask ales, a thoughtfully selected wine list and a diverse food menu.
The 15th- Century food timbered hall house has a spacious interior with a sizeable bar and restaurant area, but it's still possible to tuck yourself away for a quiet drink in a hidden corner.
We were seated near the log - burning stove - blazing in the centre of the dining area - and nibbled on some homemade bread while we made our decisions. The menu featured a choice of traditional pub
classics, seasonal dishes and a bold list of specials. We began with the honey-roasted fig with prosciutto ham and pan-fried fishcake with citrus creme fraiche. Following this, we both indulged in slow-cooked pork belly with seared scallops and apple fritter, followed perfectly by a couple of warming Irish coffees.
The staff were extremely outgoing and helpful, and the service flowed effortlessly. I'll be returning soon, but next time with the whole family in tow; we can all enjoy the homely atmosphere and wholesome food, without squabbling over the washing up.
