Jardins de Cap Roig - Girona, Spain
The Gardens of Cap Roig, unique space in the Roig, unique space in the Mediterranean.
Located between the towns of Palafrugell and Mont-ras, in the county of ther Baix Emporda' (Girona), the gardens of Cap Roig are a singular, unique space on the Mediterranean. Nature, art, culture and history unite in this 17-hectare enclave that holds nearly 1,000 botanical species from all over the world and sculptures by renowned Spanish and international artists. The open-air auditorium is the setting for one of the summer's most prestigious music festivals, the gardens of Cap Roig Festival.
The history of this space goes back to 1927, when the Russian colonel Nicolai Woevodsky, lover of drawing and architecture, and the English aristocrat and decorator Dorthy Webster, an archaeology and gardening enthusiast, were searching on the Costa Brava for a place to live and to build their dream.
After years of effort and work, they succeeded in creating this singular space where nature and calm reign. The couple rest, as they wished, in one of the most beautiful corners of this spot. The castle and its gardens are today their legacy.
In 1969 the Woevodsky's ceded the entire property in exchange for a guarantee that its landscape and architectural patrimony would be conserved. Their dream lives on today, thanks to "la Caixa" Welfare projects, who have taken over the estate and opted decisively for conserving it. Both the sculpture park, with works by major contemporary masters, and the Gardens of Cap Roig Festival, which brings together major names of the international circuit, convert this idyllic setting into a landscape and tourist reference of the Costa Brava.
