Saluting Battery - Valletta, Malta

The Saluting Battery in Valletta occupies one of the best vantage points in the capital overlooking the grand Harbour and its environs.  Its origins date back to the time when Valletta itself started being built
in 1566 by the Knights of St. John.  Just a year before that, during the Great Siege of Malta, its
strategic location was skilfully used by the invading Ottoman army to lay siege to Fort St. Angelo
across the harbour. Positioned on the lower tier of St. Peter and st. Paul's Bastion this battery commands the whole of the harbour and a good part of the land that surrounds it
.
The Saluting Battery is located at the  right extremity of   Valletta's front as one enters it.  One can
reach it by walking past the Auberge de Castille (present day office of the Prime Minister) heading
straight into the Upper Barracca Gardens and down the steps at back of the main fountain in the Gardens.  Alternatively one can reach it from  Battery Street on the side of the garden.
