A City Below ....
Over the invasions, Naours' chalky plateau was dug by men during a long time since the 3 rd
century, used initially as stone quarry. It provided shelter for the population during all
invasions which took place in Picardie. It was used as "muches" (hiding places in picard
dialect).
At a depth of 33 metres under the hill, this large underground city could accommodate about
3000 people with their animals.
Inside everything was very well organized. You will discover there 28 galleries ( 2000 metre
long) 300 chambers, public squares, stables, wells chimneys and a chapel......
Occupied by the allies during the 1st world war, the "muches" were used as headquarters
by the german's forces from 1942 to 1944.
A City above .....
On your way out, the Picardy Crafts Museum will welcome you and move you back to
bygone days. Brought to life in their typical environment, 14 waxwork dummies will comment
upon their old trades. For example, on the village square you will hear and see side by side the
knife grinder, the basket maker, the "Garde-champetre" (village policeman) and the
" tireloteuse" ....
As a happy end to your visit ... the park, the mills!
The two windmills are of the pivot type. The smaller one used to be an oil mill and the other
one a lour mill. Standing on top of a hill called the "Colline du Guet" they stretch their wins over
the caves and the lovely 12 ha woody park where lies almost unseen a playground, a mini-
golf, animals park.
For your comfort:
A large and free car park, a bar, a restaurant (open in high season) and shops are awaiting
your coming at the entrance of the site.
If you enjoy picnicking, wide grassy expanses and covered areas are at your entire disposal.
For you accommodation:
"Bed & Breakfasts"and campsite are available at proximity and most hotel chains can be
found within 18 kms (in Amiens and Doullens).
For safety's and hygiene's sake, our four-legged friends are not allowed.
