Eiffel Tower - Paris - France

Dominating the capital's skyline at a lofty height of 324 metres, La Tour Eiffel was built as a

showpiece entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World Fair commemorating 100

years since the French Revolution.

In total, it took 300 workers two years, two months and five days to join together 18,038 pieces

of puddled iron using a jaw-dropping 2.5 million rivets.

As France's best- loved monument, there can be little doubt about its future these days, but

despite its instant familiarity, the tower still has the power to surprise and captivate. Who

can forget the awesome Millennium celebrations when fireworks exploded into the midnight

air from the entire length of the structure? Who hasn't uttered a quiet gasp upon witnessing

the ten- minute glimmering light show that now occurs every hour on the hour from sunset

until 1 am?

It's views from the summit that enthral the crowds who rush to pick out the graceful sweep

of the Champs- Elysees, the unmissable outline of La Defense and the Grande Arche, as well as

the imposing headquarters.
