Housed in the medieval castle of the edge of the cliff, overlooking the sea and the town, this
museum has sheltered, since 1923, one of the most beautiful collections of ivory sculptures in
Europe. These sculptures, carved in Dieppe workshops, used the tusks of elephants imported
from Africa by local sailors.
Ancient maps, traditional and ivory ship models, paintings from the major European schools
illustrate the town's maritime heritage from he era of the 16th century sailing ship discoveries
to that of the 20th century steamers.
Dieppe was also the first seaside resort in the 1820s and all kinds of artists such as Carpeaux,
Camille Saint-Saens, Renoir, Pissarro and georges Braque frequented it's fashionable beach
and salons as did W. Clarkson Stanfiels, WalterSickert and Nicholas Horsfield.
