Witches Regatta - Venice, Italy

Fifty gondoliers dressed as Epiphany witches take part in this bizarre festive race. Running along the Venice's Grand canal from San Toma' to Rialto Bridge, the race is held in homage to La Befana, the old woman who, according to Italian tradition, hands presents to children on Epiphany Eve. Follow the sound of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' to Monte Carlo for the 35th International Circus Festival. This 10-day circus extravaganza (20 - 30 January) was started by  Prince Rainer 111 of Monaco in 1974 and quickly gained a reputation    for being the most prestigious event in the circus world, thanks in part to its coveted Clown d'0r (Golden Clown)prize awarded to the best circus act of the festival. These days the festival is presided over by Prince Rainer 111' daughter. Princess Stephanie of Monaco, in the Chapiteau de Fontvielle, a permanent big top in the cerntre of the town. Last year's acts included Cirque de Soleil performing acrobatic elements from their world famous show Alegria, veteran aerialist Natalia Herz, Clown d'Or winning Martin Lacey Jnr and Les Rossann's musical clowns.                                       montecarlofestival.mc
