Pismo Beach is an exhilarating coastal resort area comprised of a stretch of several beach towns, the local point of which is Pismo Beach.  The area, just 15 minutes south of San Luis Obispo via highway 101, offers everything from fast-paced action to total relaxation.

One of the area's truly unique features is found at Pismo State Beach.  Here, all-terrain vehicles can be rented to go four-wheel-driving on the seemingly endless dubes of California's only drivable beach - the Pismo Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.   Access points for vehicles to travel along the water's edge have been placed at Grover Beach and Oceano, the towns that flank Pismo State Beach.

Another way to enjoy traversing the water's edge is n horseback.  Horses are available for rent.  Surfing andbody boarding are also popular pastimes, with great for both sports offered for rent. A surf wheelchair is also available from the beach lifeguards.

Tide-pooling can be enjoyed here, particularly at low tide. Pismo 's a wide sandy  is also great for kite -flying or sand-castle building.

Fishing from Pismo Beach pier generally yields a catch of Red Snapper or Ling Cod.  No fishing
license is required and fishing gear can be rented.  Many come to Pismo Beach, historically the "Clam Capital of the World" ro go clamming on the State beach

Minus tides are best for clamming and the limit is 10, each at least four-and-a-half inches in diameter.  A
California  fishing license is required.

If you'd rather leave the clamming to someone else, enjoy the Pismo Beach Clam Festival held annually in October under warm, Indian-summer skies.  The weekend includes a clam chowder cook-off, live entertainment, beach volleyball and tennis tournaments, sand sculpture and kite-flying competitions ans a fishing derby from the Pismo Pier.

The fresh, salt air of Pismo Beach area is also a shopper's paradise.  Charming boutiques, galleries displaying local art and shops selling authentic antiques  beckon shoppers.

For those who take their relaxation seriously, mineral spas to the oak-shrouded canyon leading to nearby Avila Beach offer soothing respite.  At Avila Beach, a popular sunbathing spot holds the promise of warm sunshine and shelter from ocean breezes.

Also in Avila Beach, guided hikes along the Pecho Coast Trail to the Point San Luis Lighthouse are
offered twice weekly.
