Southwest of Santa Maria, hidden in a peaceful valley on Highway 1, is the town of LOMPOC (pronounced Lompoke") . Known as the :"City of Murals n the Valley of Flowers" the town is bordered from June through September by acres of vivid zinnias, marigolds, sweet peas, petunias and other blossoms.

The annual Lompoc Flower Festival is a popular event held the last weekend each June.   Self-guided tours of the more than 800 acres of flower fields can also be enjoyed   A brochure on the 19-mile tour is available from the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce.

The city encourages public mural arts Begun 1988, the project has led to 20 large murals being designed , produced and made a part of both public and private buildings. Several of the murals have become a part of "Murals have become a part of "Mural Alley"a two block stretch of buildings in Old Town.

La Purisima Mission is another popular Lompoc attraction.  Surrounded by more than 900 acres. La
Purisima is the state's most fully restored mission boasting tended gardens, corralled livestock and rooms restored to original period.

The mission is open daily, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.  In addition to the mission, 12 mile sof maintained trails are available for hiking, biking and horseback riding.   Picnic tables are secluded beneath ancient oak trees.

Vandenburg Air Force Base, the western spaceport, is among the nation's most important military and space installations.  A monthly tour showcases the base and wildlife sanctuary it maintains on its
90,000 acres.

The Lompoc Museum built in 1910 in what was once the town's Carnegie Library.  The museum's collection includes Chumash Indian artifacts, early pioneer history and information about the archaeology and history of the Lompoc Valley.  The newest addition to the collection is a dolphin fossil
estimated to be 7 million years old.
Located at 200 South H Street, the museum is open to the public from 1-5 pm Tuesday through Friday and from 1-5 pm Saturday and Sunday.
