The Fish Of The Lakes - Val Camonica, Italy

It is possible to enjoy fishing in the waters of the lake throughout the year, subject to certain rules and
periods during which there is a ban of catching given fish species.  The species of fish found in Lake Iseo include char, chub, vairone , tench, arborella, eel, pike and whitefish.   Some fish, such as the rainbow trout, largemouth bass and pumpkinseed have been introduced artificially, while the carp was introduced to ebino in the Romanesque period.
The problematic environmental conditions relate to the eutrophication of the lake, pollution and poor oxygenation conditions of the water; have had a considerable impact on the wealth of fish especially harming those species that require clean, fresh and well oxygenated water to live and to reproduce in, such as salmonids.  Two of the most characteristic fish from the lakes of Bergamo are the char and the tench.
The  tench is a large fish with a dark green back and incredibly yellow belly, and is authentic symbol of the carp family native to our fresh waters and a key ingredient of the traditional cuisine from Lake iseo and the surrounding areas.  The tench is he largest native Italian cyprinid (carp is bigger but, as
mentioned above, is non native:  it was introduced by man in Rman times).  It is common throughout the lake, and adapts to all types of environment s as long as there is food and very clean water
(although it hides in and feeds on musd); it is found in both mud and seaweed, and sometimes even among the rock faces.
The char is very similar to the trout but with a more elongated and tapered shape.  It has a dark colouring with lighter round spots, and its fins and belly have pink hues.
It has very strong jaws and white flesh some regard as tastier than that of trout.
It mainly lives in deep and clean waters on the rocky bottoms of lake.  It feeds on plankton substances,
grubs, insects, molluscs and in adulthood also other fish.  Given its eating habits, a good fishing
technique is that of spinning, a technique carried out by launching and retrieving  special artificial bait constructed of metal or plastic
