Lukacs Thermal Baths - Hungary
Budapest is gaining a reputation as one of Europe's most exciting cities, thanks to its top restaurants, bars and clubs. But what make the city truly unique are its world-famous thermal baths. Hungary's capital has carried the title of Spa's City for 80 years, but one spa in particular has been renowned for its service since the Middle Ages.
Lukas Spa was the favourite location of the Turkish Grand Vizier, Pasha Mustafa. After Buda was recaptured from the Turks in 1686, the baths became the property of the Hungarian Treasury. Visitors would come from around the world to seek remedies for their ailments, with many successfully recovering, and later placing marble plaques on the walls as tribute.
Today, the spa is a complex of thermal pools, swimming pools, activity pools, a wellness section and saunas offering a wide range of services for visitors. The waters are considered among the most effective of any of the spas in Budapest, which is why the place has become a favourite meeting point for Budapest's leading artists and politicians.
