Ta' Gurdan Lighthouse - Gozo

Having the privilege of living in Gozo, I spend a lot of time during the winter, autumn and spring months rambling around the island.
One of our favourite walks is around the North West of the Island and in particular the area around
Gharb towards the Ta' Gurdan Lighthouse.  Watching the sun set in the west is breath-taking and there is no better spot then perched up high overlooking the rich terrain below.

The lighthouse was built in 1851 when the Maltese Islands were ruled by the British,  It was constructed due to the large volume of maritime traffic that started arriving in the area.  Originally the Lighthouse had one oil lantern with a rotating reflector but then had an upgrade with 21 custom made lamps and silver plated reflectors making it visible from u to 60 km away.

As modern technology took over, the lighthouse was automated but it has more than  served its purpose
over the years.
