Ancient House Museum Of Thetford Life - Thetford, UK

The charming black and white building known as the Ancient House is among the principal attractions of the town of Thetford in Norfolk.  It is one of the best examples of an early Tudor town
house in East Anglia featuring an elaborate oak ceiling in the main hall. The house is now a museum with 21st century displays, telling the remarkable story of Thetford and the Brecks.

Discover rich collections alongside audio guides, films and animations.  Learn more about Thetford's most famous son, Thomas Paine, political writer and radical thinker of the 18th Century, who played
a key role in the American War of Independence.

Find out about the town's connection with an Indian Prince, Maharajah Duleep Singh whose son Prince Frederick purchased the Ancient House for the town.

The former inhabitants of the 500-year-old Ancient House also make an appearance, from Mrs
Newton, a Victorian landlady, to rabbit warreners and local politicians.

Oliver Bone, Curator, said "Thetford is remarkably rich in archaeological material.  From the Roman silver and gold of the Thetford Treasure, found at Fison's Way in 1979, to fantastic sites such as Castle Hill, Britain's largest medieval earthwork, there's a wealth to discover"

Throughout the year events and activities for schools, groups, families and the general public are held at the museum. A new exhibition / Love Toys & Games opened 12th April, followednby an exhibition telling the story of Thetford during  WWI in August
