Central Archipelago - Stockholm, Sweden

The German military strategist Helmuth von Moltke was not a cheerful type.  Apparently, he only laughed twice in his life:  the first time when his mother-in-law died, the second when he saw Vaxholm fortress.

As early th 1500s, Vaxholm's strategic importance as the entrance to Stockholm was realized and a defence tower was built on the site.over the years, it was expanded and eventually become the fortress that is it today. it may look impressive, but during a test in 1872, an armoured boat shot a cannonball right through its 2.2 metre thick wall.

Know your Archipelago

"Kobbe" rough translation"arock": small, low. rocky island with little vegetation

"Skar" or "skerry" in english; a rock above the water, though less rugged than a "kobbe2. What is considered to be a skerry varies from region to region.

"Holme"  usually translated as "islet"; a small island with a small amount of vegetation but few trees due to lack of space and soil. There is no hard and fast distinction between islet and island or between
islet and skerry.

Coal Merchant Ronstrom

It is quite a summer house he built for himself, coal merchant Wilhelm Ronstrom on Finnhamn. Today it is the archipelago 's largest hostel with 80 beds. on a knoll nearby stands the funnel from his yacht as a landmark for sailors today, and a memorial to days long passed.
