The History Of The Museum

The Maritime Museum opened at Ladugardsgardet in Stockholm on 28th May 1938.  Three architects
had competed to design the building, based on a series of requirements.  For example, functionalism was out of the question!

The winning design was by renowned architect, Ragner Ostberg. He designed the museum in classical style with Gustavian influences, but the simplicity
and bright, clean surfaces still show
traces of functionalism

The museum was designed to house the impressive model collections, which had been stored of the Swedish naval bases for centuries.  But the exhibitions also included magnificent historical objects.like figureheads and the entire stern of Amphion, King Gustaf III's schooner yacht, whose golden splendour had survived intact since 1778.

The collections grew over the years and the museum now preserves a largwe number of objects and documents.  Our permanent exhibitions focus on merchant shipping and naval history.  They are supplemented by temporary exhibitions offering a variety of perspectives on maritime history, the contemporary world and the future.

Marine Archaeology And Cultural Heritage

Our marine archaeologists seek to preserve and increase knowledge of wrecks and other underwater remains.
They conduct studies and provide consultancy services on a contract basis throughout sweden.

The museum also promotes and supports the preservation of valuable historical ships and masritime environments.  Sweden has a long coastline, as well as many lakes, rivers and canals. Ships, boots, lighthouses, habours, locks, shipyards - all are vital to our shared maritime heritage.

The maritime Museum At Galarvaret - Open During The Summer

Galarvarvet is one of Stockholm's most popular open-air zones. It is close to the water and offers new experiences everywhere you turn. Not only that, but history is always around the corner.  The navy built ships in the area from the 18th century until 1969 - galleys, large sailing ships, submarines, seaplanes, torpedo boats - you name it!

Find out how a beacon worked onboard the lightship Finngrundet, built in 1903. The museum's pier oftenhosts other historical ships as well.
