Einsieden - Switzerland
Location:
Einsiden lies at around 900 meters above sea-level in a high pre-alpine valley in the heart of Switzerland's origins. The glacier-formed landscape, with its moors, is surrounded by forested hills. The harmoniously located Lake Sihl as well as the mountain landscapes,
that include the spectacular Wagital, Glarner and Central Swiss Alps, provide a final touch
to the picture-perfect views.
Climate:
Einsieden is under the influence of the west winds. Depending on the climate situation,
there are however, various micro climates. Therefore it frequently happens that on the
valley floor a cold and humid layer builds up, whereas the southern mountain slopes
warm up and dry out. The foehn (a dry southern wind) provides sunny days with
excellent visibility particularly in autumn, even though it is not as strong here as in the
more typical foehn valleys. The reason for this is the unique position of Einsiden. The
town lies in a basin, which is closed towards the south and is open towards the north,
Due to its height the temperature is usually a few degrees lower than in the area
surrounding Lake Zurich. However, when central Switzerland is steeped in a thick fog
during the winter months, the sun here shines down brightly from a brilliant blue sky.
This somewhat harsher climate also affects the vegetation and therefore conifers are predominant. Fruit trees survive only in protected gardens.
Paracelus
Famous physician, alchemist, chemist, revolutionary and Christian. Born as Aureolus
Theophratus von Hohenheim in 1493, near <Teufelsbrucke> (Devil's Bridge) in the
parish of Egg, he was not recognised during his lifetime, Paraceleus is now considered
one of the great men of cultural history. He practically left no trace in Einsieden. In
1941 a monument was built by Zurich's Alfons Maag in the Park of Paracelsus; the
mother with her children represents the man's humanity as well as the doctor's
philanthrophy. An earlier wall memorial was transferred to a rock close to <Devil's
Bridge> - over the River Sihl- Paraceleus birth place. The Fram Museum shows the most
important facts of the life and work of the great Physician in small, permanent
exhibition.,
