Covela - Portugal

Our estate, located on the right bank of the Douro river in northern Portugal has been truly favoured by Nature: the vineyards form a south-facing amphitheatre; its sunny micro-climate is almost Mediterranean; its granite terracing helps ripen the grapes to their full potential; and all this produces a unique family of wines of the highest quality and distinctive character.

Since the 1990's Covela has produced top-quality swines - first carne "assemblages"of  Portuguese
and international grape varieties and then, since 2012, single varietal Vinhos and Arinto grapes. All
have won acclaim in Portugal and beyond its borders. From the best vantage points of this estate, that today occupies nearly 50 hectares, one can enjoy some of the best views over the Douro and the exuberant vegetarian, that marks the river's passage through the D.O.C Vinhos Verdes Region

Covela's main house and winery, at the heart of the estate, were designed and extended by the estate's former owner, Manoel de Oliviera, one of the most significant directors of European Cinema in the 2nd half of the 20th Century. The vines , always present, grow around the ruins of the ancient manor house and chapel and spread over terracing that has marked the landscape for centuries.

Receiving visitors in these idyllic, surroundings is part and parcel of the Covela team's DNA. From Spring through Autumn visitors can enjoy the magnificent views over the vineyards from the two main terraces, while participating in our casual wine tastings or enjoying regional dishes prepared by our kitchen staff.
