Uses and Functions of Tapestries

Tapestries, whether individual or forming part of a collection, have had many purposes throughout history: contributing towards the habitability and comfort of public and private spaces; helping create the formal and ostentations atmosphere rthat certain civil and religious ceremonies required; and portraying images and religious, narrating stories and depicting a range of artistic styles. Besides  their obvious decorative value, they have an educational nature and a literary and symbolic meaning that is more profound and difficult to appreciate.

Although the Zaragoza Metropolitan Chapter has always valued the artistic and decorative importance of tapestry, it acquired, created and cared for the collection in order to adorn the houise of God and give greater splendour  to the Christian faith. The "adornments" (empaliadas) that emblished the naves of the Church of San Salvador (better known as La Seo) and subsequently the Pilar Basilica are well-renowned, especially those used throughout Easter Week and during the festivitiesw of Corpus Christi. This traqdition lasted until 1970 and the Corporation Capitular is waiting for the time when it may br revived.
