Cathedral of St. Fethlimidh - Kilmore, Ireland


T he Cathedral is situated on a wooden hill not far from the shores of Lough Oughter. According to tradition, it is here that St. Fethlimidh founded a small church in the 6th century.

The present Cathedral was completed in 1860. The cathedral is built in the Middle Pointed Gothic style.
The stained glass windows are a colourful and attractive feature.  In addition, an original copy of the first translation of the Old Testament into Irish can be seen.  This was undertaken by Bishop Bedell who presided here from 1629 - 16.42.   Other features in the grounds include a Holy Well; the remains of the Episcopal House built in 1620 and a motte and bailey with 18th ice house.

Kilmore is located on the right 5km from Cavan town on the R198.
