The Bosnian Pine - Basilicata, Italy

The park's emblem, the Bosnian pine, is an extraordinary creation that looks as though it has been made from rock shaped by the wind.  From its beginning, it seems to emerge through its roots, which penetrate deep down into the layers of rock, enabling them to climb over ridges, slopes and overhangs in the most
improbable positions. The strong winds, the snowstorms and the lashing rain, meanwhile, twist its trunk and branches into incredible shapes.  Its bark, which is deeply weathered to form "loricas" (plates like those in the armour of Roman soldiers) has given the tree its Italian name of 'pino loricato'. Arriving here from the
distant Balkan forests, it chose inaccessible ravines and precipices as its abode, on Monte Pollino, Serra
Dolcedorme and around the Great Pollino Pass, seeming to act as the park's trustworthy sentry. The final
remarkable forest of Bosian pines stands at the foot of Monte Palanuda in the Orsomarso forests.
