In 1776 when a fire in the Palazzo Reale destroyed the city's main theatre, architect Giuseppe Piermarini was called upon to design a new one. It was inaugurated in 1778 with an opera by Antonio Salieri. La Scala is one of Europe's biggest theatres, and boasts some of the best acoustics in the world.
The Museo del Teatro, created in 1913 contains a collection of sculpture, autographs, paintings, costumes and
other aretfacts related to the theatre.
