The Traditional Headquarters in Cologne on the Rhine.
A Valuable Gift.
In 1792ba Carthusian monk presented the young Mulhens couple with a valuable wedding gift.
It was a secret formula for the production of an "aqua mirabilis", later called Eau de Cologne.
Wilhelm Mulhens soon realized the value of this formula and founded a company for the
production of Eau de Cologne in Glockengasse, where the original building can still be found
today.
The Miracle Water.
At that time Eau de Cologne was used internally and externally. Due to its invigorating and
refreshing effects it was often sold under the name "aqua mirabilis"
The Number 4711.
In 1796, during the French occupation of Cologne, the French commander in Cologne, General
Daurier, ordered the consecutive numbering of houses. Wilhelm Mulhens' house received the
number 4711, which then - in 1875 - became a registered trademark.
The Secret Formula
4711 original Eau De Cologne was mixed and stored for maturing in large oak casks. For
nearly 200 years the production method hasn't changed and is still subject to the strictest
secrecy and quality control standards.
The Carillon.
Every hour from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. passers-by stop to watch the carillon with its historical
equestrian figures moving to the notes of the Marseillaise on the south facade of the
traditional headquarters.
