Marathon of the Sands Marrakech, Sahara

Six days in the Sahara in April This six-day, 243km race across the Sahara desert is quite rightly considered one of - if not the - toughest endurance race in the world. Competitors must carry everything they need for the six days, including water, medical kit, sleeping bag, compass and a minimum of 2,000 calories a day. the tent is the only thing they don't need to carry on their back. And if it wasn't enough, runners have to avoid pitfalls such as crippling blisters, heat stroke, spiders, scorpions and upset stomachs - not to mention the agony of running with sand in your shoes. If you would like to join the 1,000 like-minded athletes on this sandy adventure, log on to   dartbaroud.com Date:   31March - 11 April

The Viareggio Carnival - Pisa, Italy

The Viareggio Carnival, just outside Pisa dates back to 1873, and has been a visual feast for the eyes ever since, with floats, music, general merriment and mayhem. Parades roll out for the four Sundays preceding Lent (30 January, 6, 13, and 20 February) but the main event will be Martedi Grasso ( Fat Tuesday) with a glorious firework display and lengthy processions. The floats are the focal point of each parade and often reach up to 40m tall.             viareggio.ilcarnevale.com
