The Benedictine Abbaye of Saint- Hilaire came under the protection of the Counts of Carcassonne as early as the 9 C. Suspected of heresy during the Albigension crusade, in the 13C the monks managed to find the funds necessary to extend the abbey church and to re-build the cloisters.The church houses a major 13C work by the Master of Cabestany : a reliquary - sarcophagus representing the martyrdom of St Saturnibn or St Sernin, the first bishop of Toulouse .
