The Pau Chateau Quarter - Pau Pyrenees, France

An active area with a historical heart, the Chateau quarter and its pedestrian coble stoned streets take you on a picturesque trip back into history.  Taste the best of the "terrior" local products in the many  restaurants in the area.

National Museum of the Chateau of Pau

As the emblematic birthplace of the  - Good King Henry- it remains forever tied to this popular royal figure.  The diversity of its architecture is a condensed version of the city's history. The Montauser Tower to the dungeon and its simplistic architecture is a statement of the tower's initial defensive role.
Starting in the XVth  century emblishments were then gradually added, following the rise in prestige of the royal crown of Navarre.  Refinement of the renaissance period therefore softened the military  functions it had held until then.  The Chateau as we know it today is the result of restoration during the XIXth century.
The castle gardens also date back to that period. This prestigious environment of the court of Navarre
was created by Henry of Albert and Marguerite of Navarre, grandparents of Henry IV.  As early as the
XVIII century, urbanism overtook these gardens of which a large part of the Grand Park still exists
near rue d'Etigny, and is an ideal place for a stroll along the banks of the Gave and on the outskirts
of the city.

What not to miss in the neighbourhood:

At number 2 of rue du Chateau, Hotel Sully is a private estate from the XVIIth century, with an interior court paved with <peach pit> river polished stones from the gave.  Rub its knocker on the front door for a bit of good luck.

Saint Martin's Church, named after the city's patron dates back to the XIXth century.  Admire the mysteries of the rosary painted by Hippolyte Flandrin and a Resurrection of Christ by Eugene Deveria.

The Chapel of Perseverance, renovated and converted into a gallery for exhibits, with its little known charm will no doubt surprise visitors.

The Parliament Of Navarre in 1620, Louis XIII signed the Edict of the union of Bearn and France.
The Parliament of Navarre was therefore created and housed in the Court of Justice in 1585, which was located at the corner of today's Place  de la Deportation. After burning in 1716, the ra vaged court was rebuilt and abandoned in 1856 in favour of the current court house.  Having been restored, it now houses the public institution <Conseil General des Pyrenees Atlantiques>. On the western facade, one can see a tribute in the form of a medallion to Louis Barthou and Leon Berard, two academics and political figures of the IIIrd republic, both born in the Bearn.

Must Locations & Landmarks Pau Pyrenees, France

The panoramic view of the Boulevard des Pyrenees

"The city of Pau sheds the deep blue blanket of the Pyrenees from the  hillsides of the Gave over to the luxurious villas" (Francis jammes). While standing on this boulevard that was finished in 1900, you will admire the unique panoramic view of the Pyrenees Mountain range. Let yourself be overwhelemed by the changing sceneries that unravel from one season to the next.

The Boulevard des Pyrenees

Already in the XIXth century, foreign visitors praised the views that can be seen from the Boulevard des Pyrenees. "That which truly seduces, which has no equal in the Universe, that one never tires from admiring, is the unequalled panoramic view from the hillside vineyards to the mountains that create a marvellous show and seems to be have been intentionally arranged by fairies " (Michel de
Chrouschoff, 1891)

Created as a mountain version of the <promenade des anglais> in Nice, this boulevard with its slight 850m incline takes you from the Chateau all the way up to the Palais des Beaumont and its fabulous park in the heart of the city.  It is an amazing balcony that provides a view of almost 150 km of the
Pyrenees mountain range.  Below the boulevard, the ,Sentiers du Roy> walking paths wind around and lead you enjoyably to the train station.

A railing for orientation

The Boulevard des Pyrenees is a  "balcony" that hides a little secret.  Stand facing the Pyrenees. Gaze
towards the highest chimney, which is the old tramway factory and now houses the inter-communal archives.  The railing will show you the name of the peak or the site right behind the chimney, from the hills of the Ariege all the way to the Basque Country.

Walking Along the Walls - Bergamo, Italy

A pleasant stroll to explore the Venetian Walled Circuit.

Length of the walking tour:  approximately 3 kilometres

- Path:  Porta S Agostino - Viale delle Mura - Colle Aperto - Via Boccola - Via alla porta

- S Lorenzo - Via della Fara - Porta S Agostino

Did you know that....?

....along Viale delle Mura, a few meters from Porta S Agostino, you can admire two gigantic vine topiaries, one swan-shaped and the other heart-shaped

....since 1887 the funicular connects the Lower Town (271 a,s,l) with the Upper Town (356 a.s,l)

The idea of connecting the two parts of Bergamo with this kind of transportation was originally intended to save the Upper Town from economic and geographic isolation, which occurred after the
development of the Lower Town.
A second funicular connects the Upper Town with S. Vigilio Hill (459 a.s.l), the starting point for relaxing strolls which lead to ancient roads and breathtaking glimpses of the panorama.

.....on the small plots of land surrounding the Walls, mostly in Borgo Canale area, the Sacrola dei Colli
di Bergamo ( a variety of endive) has been cultivated for centuries.

.....in 1961, Enrico panattoni, owner of "La Marianna" restaurant, created a gelato variety that would
become world famous.  Consisting of milk-based ice cream filled with fine, irregular chips of chocolate, this flavour was named after one of the most popular curses served at his restaurant.

....at the corner of each gate, of some streets and at S.Viglio Funicular station, you can see marble headstones reading "sul livello del mare m.." (altitude above sea level ...mt)

....columns and crosses were placed in the spots where churches had been demolished during the construction  of the Walls

....from the walls you can spot Kilometro Rosso and the ilab(Centro Ricercas e Innovazione itakcementi); designed by two-world famous architects; the former by Jean Nouvel and the latter by
Richard Meier.

Discover the lower Town using the binoculars placed along the walls.

The Venetian Walls - Bergamo, Italy

Discovering the defensive systems and the Fortifications of Bergamo

The City of Bergamo is leading the proposed nomination of the serial transnational site The venetian Works of Defence between 15th and 17th Centuries for the UNESCO World Heritage List; which is representative of the complex defensive system designed and built by the Serenissima republic of Venice to control its territories and the commercial routes.  The site extends for more than 1,000 km across the " Stato di Terra " ( Lombard-Venetian) and the "Stato di Terra" (Sea State: Croatia, Montenegro)
The cities constituting the site are significant examples of the fortification work that Venice carried out, thanks to the best architects, military engineers and designers of the time, who moved across the
Republic's territories. The works of the defensive system were conceived as a network, and each single element of it played a strategic role inside the project.

Our two Tourist Information offices, open all the year round, are glad to provide you with all the information on the Venetian Walls and the City of Bergamo.

Organ Concert, St Stephen's Basilica, Budapest, Hungary

The St Stephen's Basilica is one of the most beautiful neo-classical buildings of Budapest.  This is the most important church building in Hungary, one of the most significant tourist attractions and the third highest building in Hungary.  The construction started in 1851, according to the plans of Jozsef
Hild, and was completed by Miklos Ybl & Jozsef Kauser in 1905, in the next 50 years the church suffered  from wars, storms and earthquakes.  The church was reconstructed between 1983 - 2003.

The program of the concert was adapted by Miklos Kovagtis, one of the most famous concert and oratorio singers in Hungary.  Among numerous prizes in 1992 he also received the highest prize  a
Hungarian artistian aquire the Kossuth Prize.  The flute is played by Eleonara Krusic who is already
known for her performance with different orchestras from Barcelona to Zurich, Graz and Vienna

After the performance we would like to invite you to a one and a half hour sightseeing cruise with candlelight buffet dinner and drinks.  The same program is available without dinner too, with drinks only (a glass of sparkling wine, and another drink, soft drink, wine or beer) Guiding is not included.

Treasures Under The City - Budapest

Uncovering the archaeological heritage of Budapest,
                                                       1867/2005 - 2015

April 12 - September 17, 2017

Temporary exhibition in the Castle Museum of the Budapest History Museum.

We rarely pause to think while walking the streets of Budapest that the relics of the past lie hidden under our feet.  the systematic investigation of the capital city's archaeological relics began after the
Compromise of 1867, in the last third of the nineteenth century.  This exhibition shows how the archaeological investigation of the city began and the current state of the exploration of the past, inviting visitors on a tour of the city's under-ground treasures.
The tour takes us to several archaeological regions, from the Danubian islands, the prehistoric settlement chains extending along stream banks and the military forts guarding the frontier of the Roman Empire to Buda castle, the seat of the medieval kings  of Hungary.

Most of the excavations presented here were the valuable "by-products" of major development projects in Budapest such as the reconstruction of Kossuth Square, the renovation of the Castle Garden Bazaar, Matthias Church and the former Town Hall of Buda, as well as of the development of
Graphisoft Park.  The large-scale infrastructural development projects in Budsapest such as the construction of the M0 Motorway and of the city's sewage network likewise provided ample work for archaeologists.

The past ten years have seen over a hundred archaeological excavations in the city, which yielded several thousand finds and relics, many of which are displayed here for the first time.
In addition to offering a glimpse into the daily lives and costumes of past peoples, these finds and relics also attest to the skills of ancient potters and the superb artistic quality of Roman-period
mosaics and medieval wall paintings. The disc brooch from a Sarmatian burial and the cast bronze strap-end bearing the image of a stag bear witness to the high craftsmanship of the Migration period.

The excavation photos and the reconstructions enable visitors to feel part of the  underground time capsules preserving various moments and experiences of the historical past. The skeleton found under
the dome of a medieval oven or a musket bullet lodged in a vertebra adds a personal touch to the past.
The broken vessels buried in a Bronze Age pit allow the reconstruction of the final act of a ceremonial feast held as part of a Bronze Age ritual. Our conservators refitted over a hundred vessels of the tableware used during the feast.  The earliest finds date from Neolithic, from around 5200 BC
while the latest objects are represented by a series of Latin class essays written in 1810, found during an archaeological and architectural survey.

Gombito Tower - Bergamo, Italy

The name "Gombito" comes from the location of the tower, which rises ad compitum, or at the point, or at the point of intersection of the two main roads of the Roman city.  Owned by the Zoppo family, it was built in the 12th century and is 51.60 meters  high.  The tower has exceptionally maintained its original appearance, characteristic of medieval defense buildings, in the 16th century a shop  ofthee was opened on the ground floor.
The building maintained its commercial use until the last decade of the 20th century in 1877 the owners donated it to the city of Bergamo., who in 1892 built the internal wooden staircase, still in use. Since the 20th century the tower has undergone a number of maintenance and preventive measures, the most important of which took place between 2001 and 2009 structural consolidation,
restoration of the exterior and improved safety of the staircase.
Since 2005 the Gombito Tower has housed the tourist information office (IAT) of the Muncipality of Bergamo.

The Routes of History

Panoramic rooftop terrace

The top of the tower provides a privileged place to enjoy  a 360 degree view of Bergamo and its monuments, the towns on its outskirts, its hills and valleys and on very clear and sunny days; the
Apennine mountains! The only way to have this unique opportunity is to climb the 365 steps  of the
staircase inside the tower in a matter of minutes you will have access to the rooftop terrace, a prelude to an unforgettable sensory.

Interior

Within the tower you can admire the construction details of a 12th century defense structure, built by
skilled Romaneque craftsmen, and the extraordinary nature of the walls, made of 6,827 square blocks of gray Sarnico sandstone arranged in horizontal layers.
A few narrow slits and four mullioned windows placed about 42 meters high and reachable internally
by stone steps assured a weak source of light in 1892 the wooden staircase was built inside the tower
between 2007 and 2009 it was restored and its stability and safety was improved.

The route of about 4 km reaches the outskirts of the town of Predore, passing in front of Cantieri Riva and two villas in Art Deco style: Villa Faccanoni and Villa Surre.  Close to the new Piazza Papa Giovanni, one finds the ex-church of Nigrignano, a small building whose existence was hitherto unknown, today a
multi-purpose centre for cultural events.

Travelling along the picturesque Via Manzoni along the course of the River Oglio and having passed the Cappelletta dei Morti (Chapel of the Dead) built for the plague victims of 1630, you reach Fosio locally. A rather snug church (Chiesetta) dedicated to Saint Teresa (1929) opens the cluster of homes there.  An old hamlet can be admired here which was originally the heart of the weekly market, as well as the ruins of a mill and a dam which has been functional since 1933.

Along the Provincial road for Bergamo in Castione locality rising toward the hill, we find the
Chiesetta ( small church) of SS Nazario e Rocco, notable for its 11th century Romanesque frescoes.
Above the Guema stream, the Rocchetta building dominates, a sumptuous 18th century building
constructed on the ruins of an old medieval fortification, today home of the renowned winery of the
Valcalepio area.

If you would like to spend a few hours in contact with nature, a hike on the Forcella-Molere trail is
perfect as it unwinds on the hill behind the town, offering breathtaking views of Lake Iseo. After passing the Molere area, the most evocative section of the trail, you will reach the Rocca de'
Zucchellis, an old outpost that served to defend the territory, built around the second half of the
13th century.  The Small Church of the Alpini completed in 1975 can be seen on the hill, which can
be reached by stairs that are not overly demanding.

Sarnico - Italy

Historical Overview

Formerly a place of pile-dwellings and Roman settlements, in the Medieval period it became a fortified hamlet with a castle in its centre, which no longer exists.  Under the Venetian domination, it
developed its own trade relations with the plains.  In 1566, it was granted the right to conduct a weekly market which, after 450 years, maintains this tradition every Thursday in the squares along the lake.
Failing under the French then Austrian dominations, Sarnico won independence in the rising Italian government.
The town gained national prominence during the Risorgimento for the Garibaldian attempt, known to all as " the Events of Sarnico" to invade the Trentino area and conclude national independence before time. The Garibaldian attempt, considered premature by the Italian Government, was impeded at the
last moment with force.

The Historic District

Know as the "Contrada", the historic district's streets are paved with sampietrini stones, alleys,
stairways, with portals in Sarnico stone, courtyards and picturesque balconies and gates in wrought
iron. It conserves a medieval semicircular layout with its back to themountain. It is a thriving place with shops, bars and confectioner's shops. The main street is Via Lantieri. The best way to explore it is to venture into its alleyways which offer some of its most hidden corners.  Taking Via San Paolo, you will reach the Church of San Paolo from the 1400s which houses frescoes from the 15th
century and was built directly on the ruins of the castle, as witnessed by the two embrasures on the side of the altar. The Torre dell'Orologio (Clocktower), built in 1850 on the base of the castle's
perimetrical tower, stands in the homonymous small and enclosed square.

Other important original elements of medieval buildings can be seen in the towers and walls of the buildings on Via Scaletta ( a characteristic and narrow alley going down to the lake) and Vicolo Aie .In one of the most picturesque and best preserved corners of the entire historic district stands a small
building with arcades, the old town hall until the 18th century.

Nearby we find the remains of a Medieval Tower (12" century) with mighty walls which once belonged to the old town walls and one of the entrance gates leading to the inhabited area, today used for temporary exhibitions.

The Economy

Once a town of fishermen, Sarnico owes part of its fame to its quarries, now closed, from which "Sarnico stone"was extracted and used frequently in local construction.  The silk industry now extinct, peaked about a century ago.  Sarnico is home to the renowned "Cantieri Riva" the prestigious brand-name that still produces some of the world's most sought-after and luxurious motorboats and yachts.
Sarnico today is an important business and tourism hub. The town, sheltered by hills in its early days,
extends sweetly down towards the lake, is climatically blessed by the position of the hills and lake breeze with a lovely exposition.  On the lakeshore, the ample and airy squares, the lake promenade and shops give tourism vivacity to this town, making it a pleasant place to stay.  Its geographic position and surroundings abounding with villas, green areas, entertainment and spectacular views on the lake offer tourists the perfect holiday spot.

What to visit in the centre.

  The Ganni Bellini Picture-Gallery

The Ganni Bellini picture-gallery is found in the historic district in the oldest part of Gervasoni
Palace; this 15th century building was carefully restored and today shows evidence of its former intended use: a convent for nuns.  The collection was created from approximately 150 works of art, period paintings from between the 1500s and 1700s donated to the town by Don Gianni Bellini.

The San Martino de Tours Parish Church

The "parvis"of Piazza SS Redentore with the imposing facade of San Martino de Tours parish church in baroque style dating back to the 18th century is indeed surprising. The interior was recently and accurately restored to its original beauty.  In the first chapel on the left, one can admire a fresco dated 1500 (Madonna and Child). The next chapel and the high altar are outstanding works by the Fantoni bottega from Rovetta.  The webbings in the cupola above the high altar are the remarkable work of
Francesco Monti, who evokes the shapes and tones of Gianbattista Tiepolo.

Adjacent to the parish church, one finds the Church of San Rocco, a small chapel which in antiquity (circa 1630) was built by the followers of San Rocco, so he might protect them from the contagion of plague.

Giuseppe Sommaruga And Art Deco Style

Sarnico is home of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Lombardy region, built according to architect Giuseppe Sommaruga's plans, including;  the kindergarten in Piazza SS Redentore; the mausoleum of the Faccanoni family inside the cemetery; Villa Faccanoni visible only from the lake; Villa Surre, visible from the road leading to Predore after the Cantieri Riva firm; Villa Passeri in Piazza XX Settembre, renowned for its decor.  The villas cannot be visited, except for Villa Faccanoni during concerts or occasional events.
